Malta’s government cannot credibly invoke “constitutional crisis” to justify rushed judicial appointments at home while openly politicising judicial nominations abroad.

Robert Abela ruled out nominating candidates who he claimed “worked against Malta’s interests” for the vacant post at the General Court of the EU. The Prime Minister’s claim that nominees for the post of EU judge should “work for Malta” fundamentally contradicts the principle of judicial independence he professes to defend domestically, and sits uneasily with Malta’s obligations under the Repubblika judgment, the Venice Commission standards and the EU Rule of Law framework. Preparations are ongoing in Albertville, France, for the trial on 23 February of the three young Gozitans accused of laughing gas trafficking.

It has still not been ascertained if these three were working for somebody higher up.In the meantime, one of Malta's most notorious developers has visited the three in their prison in France.Accompanying the notorious developer on the trip to France was one of Malta's most capable criminal lawyers ... Three Gozitans will stand trial in Albertville, in France, on 23 February next, for trafficking of nitrous oxide (laughing gas).

The three Gozitans were arrested on 21 January by the gendarmes of Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Savoie) in France.Searches in their cars, their apartment, as well as in garages, unearthed 6325 cans of laughing gas .The value of these cans of gas, the use of which is illegal in France, is about 340,000 euro.The three traffickers are aged between 25 and 30 years. ...
