FOR A JUST, MODERN, STRONG
AND BEAUTIFUL MALTA

Malta is heading into a new era, and it’s crucial that you take the lead. We’re aiming for a future where our communities are vibrant and genuine, not downtrodden and lifeless. A place where work pays and inspires our youth to make the country more beautiful.

Right now, things might seem bleak and discouraging. But even though I sometimes feel angry and frustrated, I haven’t lost hope—not even a little bit. Europe too can help in making Malta more beautiful. With my experience as the Secretary General of one of the four largest parties in the European Parliament for over six years, I know what we need to do to achieve this.

Is Robert Abela trying to cover up for corrupt officials?

Government wants to pass Bill 137 with the intention, it says, of protecting civil servants who make mistakes.I have no problem with honest civil servants committing genuine mistakes being protected. But, in reality, this bill makes no distinction between genuine administrative mistakes and abuse of power or corruption. One concrete example: do you remember when a minister gave her footballer friend a 15000 euro consultancy for a job he understood nothing about?Well, the go-ahead for that illegal job was signed by the permanent secretary in that Ministry. So let's be clear: in such case, this was a severe dereliction of duty by the permanent secretary. It was no genuine administrative mistake but a very conscious act of illegality by a permanent secretary, who wanted to boot lick his minister boss.Bill 137 must be amended to ensure that civil servants with such corrupt behaviour remain directly answerable for their actions. ... Well, the go-ahead for that illegal job was signed by the permanent secretary in that Ministry.

So lets be clear: in such case, this was a severe dereliction of duty by the permanent secretary.

It was no genuine administrative mistake but a very conscious act of illegality by a permanent secretary, who wanted to boot lick his minister boss.

Bill 137 must be amended to ensure that civil servants with such corrupt behaviour remain directly answerable for their actions.

Assisted death

Yesterday, the government's 60 days for commenting on the assisted death bill were up.Very fast. Too fast. Yet, important issues have come up.Keeping in mind that members and candidates of Momentum would eventually have a free vote, here is my take on all this.First, the government has to ensure that all available innovative medicines are to be made available in Malta ao that patients have access to the latest cure. When this is in place, a fully functioning palliative cure system has to be set up to offer respite and care for all areas of suffering, on the models used by the Hospice Movement and by Mater Dei Oncology department. When this is fully functional, parliament can debate and legislate on 'living wills".After these three stages have been fully exhausted, only then should parliament debate on a bill which would allow for the possibility of assisted death. ... Assisted death

Yesterday, the governments 60 days for commenting on the assisted death bill were up.

Very fast. Too fast. Yet, important issues have come up.

Keeping in mind that members and candidates of Momentum would eventually have a free vote, here is my take on all this.

First, the government has to ensure that all available innovative medicines are to be made available in Malta ao that patients have access to the latest cure.

When this is in place, a fully functioning palliative cure system has to be set up to offer respite and care for all areas of suffering, on the models used by the Hospice Movement and by Mater Dei Oncology department.

When this is fully functional, parliament can debate and legislate on living wills.

After these three stages have been fully exhausted, only then should parliament debate on a bill which would allow for the possibility of assisted death.

Public Transport: finally some good news

TOM reports that a new ferry route connecting Sliema to Gozo, with a stop in Buġibba, is expected to be announced in the coming days. This is certainly a good initiative and Minister Chris Bonett., who is implementing questionable policies with regards to land transport, must certainly be lauded for this initiative. One just hopes that there will now be a fair and open tender process and that it will not be the usual PL donor-bazuzlu to benefit from this initiative. ...
