Arnold Cassola
We Deserve Better

My 35 years in politics have taught me what is right from wrong. We, the people deserve better and we have the power to change the situation with our vote. Now is the time to change all that is wrong and unjust through our voting behaviour.

My pledge is to exercise honest politics to serve all the people of Malta and Maltese society.

The 55-year-old bi-party system has led to the political shambles we have today. Politicians are meant to serve the people and society. However, certain dishonest and greedy businessmen control certain MPs, from both parties, and even ministers who, on their part, have reduced what is supposed to be the noble vocation of politics to an exercise in greed, nepotism, cronyism and favouritism.

Today, a number of our institutions do not favour the common man on the street. The big fish keep swallowing the small. Inequality rules.

This has led to a good number of Maltese having to struggle all their life to make ends meet. All this is unfair and unjust.

The Maltese electorate has the choice of breaking this toxic mould of politics by electing to parliament, independent and third party candidates with real values, whose hallmark is honesty, integrity, credibility and consistency. If this does not happen, we will have much more of the same.

Cassola discusses the state of the environment with Friends of the Earth Malta

In a meeting with Friends of the Earth Malta officials, MEP independent candidate Arnold Cassola discussed his priorities for Malta with regards to the environment.Amongst other issues, Cassola stated that the public pathways of our country are an important heritage and give access to the open countryside to thousands of Maltese and Gozitans. These paths shall be protected by having them mapped out by a competent Authority to ensure their continued free access. Moreover, the public domain law should no longer be a "dead letter", which is not worth the paper on which it is written. Every corner of the Maltese coast must remain accessible to the public, always and everywhere. Traffic is also a big problem and therefore, to discourage the use of private cars, we must ensure a functioning, regular and punctual public transport that operates nearly around the clock. The building of flyovers and the widening of roads is a failed experiment and should be discontinued.Cassola observed that the ecological transition that the industrialized world is going through has hardly touched Malta. Our country needs to immediately adopt a serious environmental policy that favours increased research and investment in the fields of renewable energy, such as sun, wind and wave sources as well as geothermal energy. The process to set up offshore wind farms and solar farms must be stepped up.Finally, we should enforce a two-year moratorium on high-rises, in order for us to reflect on the mistakes of the past and to plan wisely for the future.Dr. Suzanne Maas, Climate Campaign Coordinator at Friends of the Earth Malta mentioned FoEM’s campaign against the proposed plans for a gas pipeline to Sicily (Melita TransGas pipeline). She said that this deal "could lead to another 30-40 years of fossil fuel reliance. Money should be spent now on a mix of renewable energy sources and on promoting energy democracy through renewable energy cooperatives, instead of planning for bigger plants for gas infrastructure,”Martin Galea De Giovanni, Director of Friends of the Earth Malta added that “our relentless pursuit of endless economic growth threatens our way of life and undermines environmental policies. Climate chaos and biodiversity collapse, pillars of a functioning society, jeopardise peace, water and food security, and even democracy. Transitioning to a post-growth economy isn't just about survival; it's about achieving the highest quality of life with the smallest environmental impact.A post-growth economy moves beyond the obsession with quantitative growth. It prioritises a regenerative and distributive system, focused on qualitative well-being for all.” ... See MoreSee Less
